Counselor at Camp Bonfire, adult summer camp, leads a group through a yoga class.
It’s the 5th installment of our Meet An Adult Camp Counselor series. Meet shay(den), camp’s Yoga instructor.
What is a fun memory you have from Camp Bonfire?
During capture the flag a camper and I dodged each other and then realized that we were on the same team and going for the same flag. We joined forces and made a plan. Together we ran up a hill towards the flag. Out of nowhere, someone watching this exchange jumped out from some bushes and came running after us!
What do you enjoy about being a adult summer camp counselor?
I love being able to create spaces for low threshold fun & silliness, I think about my role as “Counselor To My Fellow Introverts”. Are you awkward? Nerdy? Bookish or slightly sci-fi-y? Great let’s chat over a game of giant jenga until you‘re ready to giggle & kick ass at spongeball.
Why did you decide to come back to Camp Bonfire, summer camp for adults?
Camp Bonfire has created a really lovely environment where I can build friendships with other adults that isn’t based on career/networking, dating, or foreverness. I come back because I get to be present and in my body without technology for multiple days while having a blast with new and old friends.
What’s something you’re looking forward at this summer’s Camp Bonfire?
Cabin Olympics! Lemons on a spoon? The b-e-s-t. Oh and can I say spongeball one more time? I also love leading Yoga classes outside. It’s so nice to have a breeze move through a yoga class or have the trees inspire a pose.
What do you do for work and/or play when you’re not at Camp Bonfire?
Right now, I have the amazing opportunity to build intentional community that holds space for groups and individuals working on healing as the operations manager at a retreat center in rural Minnesota.
